ISYY and the Representative Council
The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland, commonly known as edari, is the highest decision-making body of the student union. Its task is to represent the interests of all 12,000 of its members both locally and nationally. The council has a broad impact on student affairs, deciding on matters such as the student union's regulations, budget, action plan, membership fees, and the composition of the board. Therefore, the council's activities directly influence your life as a member of the student community and the student union.
The role of the Representative Council can be understood by comparing it to the Finnish Parliament. It can be seen as the student union's own parliament, where students (the people) elect representatives (MPs) from the candidate lists of various groups (parties) during elections. These representatives form committees (committees) and make decisions about the board (the government). The Representative Council consists of 39 members (representatives), who are elected every two years through elections. The council selects a chairperson and two vice-chairpersons from among its members, who lead the council's activities, oversee the student union's work, and represent the student union both locally and nationally.
The current Representative Council was elected in the fall of 2023, and its term will cover the calendar years 2024 and 2025. The next elections will be held in the fall of 2025, during which representatives for the following two-year term will be elected. All members of the student union are eligible to run and vote in the elections.
